Istanbul the heart of Turkey, is a city full of history, culture, and natural beauty. Actually, this city bridges Europe and Asia, making it a truly unique destination for anyone who loves traveling and hunting down new experiences. Whether you’re interested in exploring the city’s rich heritage, sampling delicious Turkish cuisine, or simply taking in stunning views. The city has a little something for everyone, which is why it’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
Getting Around Istanbul
Getting around can be daunting if you don’t know your way around in this city. The good news is that there are plenty of transportation options available. The metro is clean, efficient and inexpensive, making it a great option for getting around the city center. There are loads of taxis as well, easy to recognize one as the taxis in Istanbul are all yellow cars with taxi signs on them.
Tip: when you get in the taxi make sure the meter is running and be keen on what you’re paying when you get off the taxi, the drivers here seem to be a little carefree and they end up overcharging especially when they notice you’re a tourist.
If you’re planning on doing some sightseeing, consider buying a Museum Pass Istanbul. This pass will give you access to many of the city’s top museums and attractions, including the Hagia Sophia and the Topkapi Palace. Once you’ve seen all there is to see in the city center, hop on a ferry/boat and take a ride across the Bosphorus Strait. Not only is it a cheap and scenic way to get from one side of the city to the other, but it’s also a great way to get some incredible views of Istanbul’s skyline. The tour typically lasts around 1-2 hours and includes stops at various points of interest along the way, if you are in the mood to walk you can hop on and off and explore more on foot.
And be sure to save some time for relaxation; Istanbul has more than its fair share of parks and gardens where you can enjoy some quiet time away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
If you’re planning a trip to Istanbul, here are some of the best things to see and do in the city.
The Blue Mosque
Built in the 17th century, is one of the most iconic and historic sites in Istanbul, it is a must-see for anyone visiting the city. It gets its name from the blue tiles that adorn the interior walls and with beautiful six minarets. Trust me, it’s even more impressive in person!
Visit the Hagia Sophia
Another one of Istanbul’s historical gems. Hagia Sophia was originally built as a Christian cathedral in the 6th century. Later, it was then converted into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. Today, Hagia Sophia is one of Turkey’s most popular tourist attractions, and for good reason – it’s truly breathtaking.
Explore the Grand Bazaar
Is one of the largest covered markets in the world. It has been around for centuries and is still one of the best places in the city to find souvenirs and gifts. You can find almost anything here, from Jewelry to spices, Turkish delight to hand-woven carpets, etc… Bargaining is expected (and even encouraged), so don’t be afraid to negotiate with shopkeepers for a better price. Believe me, or not, No trip to Istanbul would be complete without some shopping at the world-famous Grand Bazaar.
The Topkapi Palace
When it comes to historical sites, no discussion of Istanbul would be complete without mentioning the Topkapi Palace. This was the primary residence of the Ottoman sultans for centuries, and it’s now open to the public as a museum. Visitors are welcome to explore opulent rooms decorated with beautiful carpets and tapestries, as well as see some of the incredible treasures that were once housed there, like jewel-encrusted thrones and priceless works of art. You never want to miss it!
Visit Galata Tower
This landmark offers stunning views of Istanbul from its observation deck. For an even better view, head to one of the nearby rooftop bars or restaurants for a drink or bite to eat while enjoying the panorama. I recommend it during the sunset hour!
Go to a Turkish Bath
A visit to a Turkish bath (or hamam) is an essential part of any trip to Istanbul, you would want to miss such a unique centurion experience. Turkish baths are steam rooms where people go to relax and get scrubbed down from head to toe. Be sure to try out one of the many historical baths in the city!
Night Life in Istanbul
This place has a lively nightlife scene with something for everyone. If you’re looking for bars and clubs, visit Ortakoy or Beyoglu. These neighborhoods are home to some of the best nightlife in the city. If you want something more low-key, there are plenty of pubs and wine lounges located throughout Istanbul. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, check out one of the many hookah bars, Turkish people enjoy life to the maximum, so be sure to have the best time of your life in these places.
The Istiklal street
One of my favorite street. This pedestrian street in the heart of the city is one of the best places in Istanbul for people-watching and shopping. You’ll see locals and tourists alike strolling down the street, and popping into various stores, cafes and restaurants. It’s one of the busiest streets in Istanbul. Make sure to have a feel of it.
